Geohot’s Next Jailbreak for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad To Be Called Rubyra1n? – Rumor

We have just been tipped off about the possible name for the next jailbreak by Geohot, called Rubyra1n. The domain Rubyra1n.com was registered by the iPhone hacker named George Hotz (aka geohot) on 27th March 2010.
Posted Image
Interestingly, whois records for both blackra1n and rubyra1n shares same record while whois record for limera1n is different. Geohot might have changed it after the discovery of limera1n.com domain (before its release) back in April 2010. Whois records also reveals that both limera1n.com and rubyra1n.com were registered on the same day, that is March 27th 2010 which makes it even more authentic. Though there is no confirmation about this by Geohot himself. Oh and yes, Geohot is not on Twitter. If you have been following someone on Twitter with word “geohot” in its alias, than it is most likely a fake profile and I suggest you un-follow all such profiles now

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Is “Probably Going To Be a Cydia Package”

It looks like everyone seems to have missed this! But if this statement from Comex is anything to go by, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 might be as simple as installing a package from Cydia over your existing Redsn0w tethered jailbreak – Yes, you don’t need to restore or re-jailbreak your device.

Comex: it’s probably going to be a Cydia package. if I can get it to work.

When someone asked Comex “what do you mean by that”, Comex replied:

Comex: @GP34MVP that everyone’s wrong including @MuscleNerd :p

Probably referring to this statement from MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev-Team.

It is important to note that the iPhone Dev-Team already has a backup plan ready, but that will require iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blobs for untethered jailbreak. Comex is said to have a more efficient untethered jailbreak method for iOS 4.2.1. This untethered solution will almost certainly be applicable to all current iOS 4.2.1 devices, including the new A4-based ones which includes iPhone 4, iPad, Apple TV 2G and iPod touch 4G.

While the actual details about the state of the jailbreak are still unknown, but what we do know is that it is probably not coming by Christmas, as been confirmed yesterday by Comex himself.

More info as it comes, stay tuned !

The SHAtter Jailbreak Has Been Leaked

The SHAtter jailbreak which was being saved for the next iPhone update has been leaked, according to tweets by MuscleNerd and p0sixninja.

Posted Image
Posted Image

P0sixninja is publicly accusing MuscleNerd of leaking the exploit; however, MuscleNerd states this is not the case and would be illogical for him to leak the exploit since he needs the jailbreak to perform an unlock for the next device. He also notes that there were 15 others in the room when the code was posted by pod2g.

Unfortunately, this likely means Apple will block the exploit by the time any new iDevices are released.

The exploit (and payload) was developed by @pod2g a few months after @p0sixninja discovered the crash. You can watch the jailbreak demonstrated below.

Also of interest, p0sixninja says that an untethered bootrom exploit is still on the way. You can read more of the discussion from both sides via the link to their twitter accounts below...

Looks Like We’re Not Getting an Untethered Jailbreak for Christmas After All

Posted Image

Did MuscleNerd spoke too fast when he said last week that we’d get an untethered jailbreak for Christmas? It sure looks like it when reading this tweetComex sent out a few minutes ago saying that he was going to miss his Christmas deadline..

At this point, I’m not sure whether Comex is working on an untethered solution or a full new jailbreak tool (jailbreakme?) One thing is sure though, we might not get anything from him this Christmas…

This hasn’t been confirmed yet so there is no reason to freak out about it. I know I’d rather wait a few more days and have a fully functional and stable jailbreak rather than having a half-baked tool that ends up screwing things up

CopyTrans offers easier way to transfer iTunes libraries

CopyTrans, a PC software company from Switzerland, has unveiled a cross-platform solution to help one of the most common problems facing "switchers" and others who want to move their entire iTunes libraries from a Windows PC to a Mac: how can I do this while preserving aspects like play counts, album artwork, rankings and more? While it can be done manually, CopyTrans TuneSwift can ease the transfer process, as well as restore iTunes libraries.

Posted Image

The program preserves music, video, app purchases, audiobooks, iOS device backups and podcasts -- as well as the "extra" information people who have invested time in creating their library prize, like artwork, playlists and ratings. This also allows iOS device owners to keep their device linked to the original library, even as it has been moved to a new machine.

A user will download the Windows version of the program and transfer their iTunes library to an external drive, then connect that drive to the Mac and use the Mac version, presently in beta, to "restore" it to iTunes on the Mac.

CopyTrans Tuneswift is being made available free until March 15th. The Mac version can be downloaded here and registered free for MacNN readers using the code TUNESWIFT-MACNN. The Windows version is available here and can also be registered free using the same code.

Next Version of Redsn0w Will Allow You To Untether iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak With One-Click

MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Team has confirmed today that the next version of Redsn0w will include an option which will allow you to untether your iPhone jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1 without having to restore your device.

MuscleNerd: Thanks to comex, redsn0w can now handle much bigger files than ramdisk 25MB limit. Useful for "backup plan" 4.2 untether

MuscleNerd: @jkurtz87 it shouldn’t require a restore…just another redsn0w run. (That’s the goal!)

The advantage of this will be that you wont have to reinstall any of your iTunes’ or Cydia apps. All you ever have to do will be rerun Redsn0w jailbreak and it will be done!

Expect this new version of Redsn0w for all iOS devices to be available somewhere around the Christmas eve, followed by iPhone 4 unlock on newer basebands in January. We will of course let you know as soon as it is available for download

iPhone 4 Unlock Available in A Month?

Posted Image

Last month the Dev Team released an update to their UltraSn0w tool which allowed to unlock the iPhone 3G and 3GS loaded with the latest iOS 4.2.1. The iPhone 4 was left out of the equation and unless you’re still on baseband 01.59.00, you can’t unlock this device yet.

Today, some good news was uncovered about an unlock for the iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.1 baseband 02.10.04 in a tweet sent out by Sherif Hashim. The iPhone hacker confirmed that an unlock for 02.10.04 will be available, most likely before January 16th…

For those of you who don’t speak Arabic, here is the translation of the tweet sent to Sherif Hashim:

I’m going to perform my military service by January 16, will I get the unlock before this date? :D

To which Sherif Hashim replied:

sure :)

A few weeks ago, words were going around about a possible baseband downgrade that would make the unlocking process easier and less risky, but we don’t know yet if this is going to work the the iPhone 4 as well.

As usual, time only will tell, but I”m pretty confident that not only we’ll get an untethered jailbreak for Christmas, we might also get an unlock for the iPhone 4.

Apple Removes Jailbreak API From iOS 4.2

Apple has removed its built in methods to help developers detect jailbroken devices from iOS 4.2, according to NetworkWorld.

This detection API let the MDM applications in effect ask the operating system if it had been compromised. Jailbreak exploits typically change a number of operating system files, and exploit one or another low-level OS features to let users directly load their own or third-party applications.

Previously, developers had created their own series of operating system checks to detect jailbreak.

"We used it when it was available, but as an adjunct," says Joe Owen, vice president of engineering at Sybase, which offers the Afaria device management software. "I’m not sure what motivated their removing that….I’ve not had anyone [at enterprise customer sites] talk to me about this API being present or being removed."

In July of this year the Library of Congress deemed that jailbreaking your iPhone in order to install applications not approved by Apple and/or to unlock is legal.

TinyUmbrella Update Will Bypass SHSH Checks and Restore iDevice Without iTunes

Semaphore is working on an update to TinyUmbrella that will allow users to restore their iDevices without iTunes.

I've been working on a new and improved version of TinyUmbrella that will, among other things, allow you to restore your iDevice without iTunes. With the holiday season and work, this will take me a bit to get working the way I want it. I appreciate your patience and your support. You guys are awesome :) No ETAs yet but I'll post updates here and on twitter.

Semaphore explains that this means bypassing shsh checks will be possible for devices that can be exploited by limera1n (basically all devices available now) and the steaksauce exploit for the mc 2g ipod touch.

You will always be able to install a custom firmware (or stock firmware) following these directions.

1. Enter DFU
2. Run the Exploit
3. Wait for the White Screen
4. Restore the ipsw of your choice.

Some changes to the ipsw will be required. We will post more information as it becomes available.

How to get FREE credits on Textnow - Finally, a way to call people on iTouch!!!

Textnow is a great little app that lets you send unlimited SMS/Picture messages on an iPhone or iPod Touch and also gives you your own phone number. Not only that, but now you can actually make calls!!! That's right, make calls right from your iPod touch to anyone (US & Canada) for FREE (Assuming you follow these steps correctly). There are also some extra little features like disabling the annoying ads and getting a voice mail. But these require credits. Today, i will show you how to get free credits.

AND YES, THIS DOES WORK OVER 3G

Requirements:
-Installous
-Textnow 4.3 (4.2 will also work)
-Backgrounder

Step 1: Download Textnow if you haven't already.Since it is free, I like going to the app store rather than Installous.
-----------------------------------UPDATE-----------------------------------
You can no longer get Textnow 4.3 from the App Store. They upgraded to 4.3.2 which will not work for my purposes. Instead, go to Installous and get the latest version of Textnow which is currently 4.2. More info about this at the end of the post**

Step 2: Open Textnow.

Step 3: Click on the shopping cart button

Step 4: Click on the "Earn More Credits" tab. Note that I have 33 Available Credits. This is only because I already got some credits. You should have 0.

Step 5: Click on "More".

Step 6: You should now come to a screen with a list of apps. Each app will give you a certain amount of credits if you "buy" it. Go find an app with at lest 7 credits (Less than 7 will work, but they are often free and you can redeem the credits by installing it from the app store). Once you found one, remember the name and using backgrounder, Open Installous and search for the app. Often, Installous won't have the app. If you find the app in Installous, don't download it yet. Switch back to Textnow and click on the app you searched in Installous. I picked Best Alarm Clock + Weather for 14 credits.

Step 7: This should bring up the app store showing the app you chose.

Step 8: Scroll down and look at the app version. Switch back to Installous.

Step 9: Note the version of the app that Installous has. If they are different, go and choose another app because this will not work. If they are the same version, download and install it.

Step 10: Go to your home screen and find the app you installed. Open it.

Step 11: Once you open it, you should get a notification saying that you got some credits for Textnow. Once you get this notification, you are safe to delete the app. You will still have the credits it gave you.

Step 12: Go to Textnow and you will see that you've got more credits!! Just keep doing this over and over again to get more and more credits. Have fun!!

To Make Calls:

Step 1: Enable "Call Forwarding & Voicemail"

Step 2: Now you should see a "Calling Minutes" tab. It will come with 100 minutes already and you are free to "Buy" more.

Step 3: Go to the mail page and you will see a "Messages" and "Phone" tab at the top. Congratulations, your iPod is now a fully functional phone that can make and receive calls!!!

Please post if you have any Questions/Comments

Don't forget to thank if I helped you!!

**When you have accumulated enough credits, delete Textnow 4.2 and install the latest version from the App Store the late
