“DreamBoard” Goes Free For iPhone And iPod touch

DreamBoard, the popular iPhone theme solution, has gone free on Cydia after previously selling for $2.99. Dreamboard is a popular Winterboard alternative that can mimic the looks of Android, Windows 7 etc.
Dreamboard works differently than Winterboard, because it doesn’t require you to respring each time you switch themes, and it can achieve deep UI customizations without having to install other jailbreak applications
This latest version of DreamBoard also includes support for lockscreens. We’ve previously reviewed DreamBoard, and we gave it positive reviews despite random crashes and some other minor issues.
I would recommend downloading this and checking out our iPhone themes center for reviews of many DreamBoard themes.
What do you think of DreamBoard going free?

iPad Hacked to Run Multiple Apps Side by Side

Yes, and it actually works! I've wasted plenty of time already playing 2 games of Angry Birds at the same time. (I actually was playing 3 for a while, but it crashed when I tried to add a 4th). There are a few bugs, such as audio not working, and accelerometer events not getting sent to applications; it may take a while to sort these out. The bottom right button turns on "edit mode" which allows you to rearrange applications, and rotate them (Angry Birds normally runs in landscape, here they're turned). I'm debating on if I should go for the typical desktop feel or make it more SpringBoard-like and keep apps in preset locations. I probably won't have time to really polish this up and release for a few months, but I'll keep hacking away at it and possibly post updates every now and then. Performance is actually pretty good, definitely useable.

Ash is planning to attend the jailbreak meetup in New York and says he'll let a few people try it there if they wanted to.

Cydia 1.1.2 Released, Here’s How To Get It Today

Cydia, the standard application for managing unauthorized iOS apps and modifications, has received an unofficial update today to version 1.1.2. Although it doesn’t contain a release log, it’s said to have fixed several graphical bugs in iOS 5 and be slightly snappier. Stick around to find out how to load Cydia 1.1.2 on your iOS device today.
Cydia Icon
You’ll Need:
  1. A jailbroken iOS device running Cydia (iOS 4.3.3 tutorial | iOS 5 tutorial). If you’ve jailbroken your device through normal means, you’re likely set.
  2. iFile & Safari Download Manager installed on your device.
Install using iFile:
Installing the new version of Cydia using iFile is the most efficient method, and the only one if you don’t have a computer around. Here’s how to do it:
  1. Open up Mobile Safari from your device and point it to Cydia 1.1.2 (download);
  2. Follow the on-screen download instructions and select "Open with iFile" when you see a prompt.
  3. Click "Install".
  4. Respring or restart your phone.
Once you’ve followed the above steps, you should be able to launch the new version of Cydia.
Using SSH or iPhoneExplorer:
This method can be used by those who aren’t willing to purchase iFile. Although slightly more difficult, it should be pretty easy to understand for most users. Just follow the steps below:
  1. From your computer, download the new version of Cydia from here (it’s the same as the link above).
  2. Connect your device to your computer and launch iPhoneExplorer (download link). Point it to/private/var/root and place the file you’ve just downloaded in that directory.
  3. Respring or restart your phone. Once you’ve done this, Cydia should automatically update in the background.
Cydia is definitely the most popular package manager for iOS, second to the official App Store of course. Since its inception in 2008, it has become the standard way to manage unofficial iOS Apps and tweaks. Over the last few months, Saurik, Cydia’s developer, has worked hard to address many of the performance issues users have experienced. This new release takes another step towards fully fixing these problems, and begins the effort to make the software fully compatible with iOS 5, as speculated by @DinoD7, author of popular jailbreaking tutorials on YouTube:
There was no changelog to view but the assumption is that it includes some bug fixes and overall speed improvements. There’s a high likelihood that this release is one of the first steps of Cydia in its preparation for the release of iOS 5.
UPDATE: Saurik has left a comment on iPhoneDownloadBlog, warning users to stay away from this unofficial update.

Geohot is Now Working For Facebook

Facebook has hired Geohot, the popular hacker behind the iPhone and Sony Playstation jailbreaks, reports TechUnwrapped.

Joshua Hill (P0sixninja) recently mentioned in an interview that Geohot is trying to avoid the limelight after his legal battle with Sony and is concentrating on his day job at Facebook.

Gabe Rivera of Techmeme reports that Geohot started at Facebook in May and announced it on his Facebook account on June 17th. His last wall post says, "Facebook is really an amazing place to work...first hackathon over."

We wish Geohot the best of luck at Facebook but also hope he has some time left to contribute to the iPhone community.

SpoofTexting Allows Users to Send Spoofed Texts from iPhone

SpoofTexting, a new app available in Cydia allows for users to send spoof text messages directly from your iPhone. SpoofTexting is incorporated directly in the iPhone SMS app and works on iOS 4.0+ (Excluding iOS 5 beta builds). Similar services allow users to spoof phone calls, but this is one of the first services that allows for spoofed text messages. SpoofTexting works across all carriers, but currently you can only send from an iPhone.

SpoofTexting for iPhone unleashes your inner prankster by allowing you to send text messages to anyone in the USA from any phone number you want. You can actually specify what number you want the message to appear from! The person receiving the message will not be able to distinguish if the message is really coming from that phone number, or from you spoofing the number.

Obviously an app that gives you this kind of control would never be approved by Apple, so if your phone is Jailbroken head on over to Cydia and search for "SpoofTexting".

Its important to note that SpoofTexting is not technically an app, because there will be no icon after you install it. What you are installing is a plugin that will let you send spoofed text messages from within your native SMS app. If you look at the screenshot on the right, you will notice that there is a new icon added next to the compose button. Tap on this button to compose a spoofed text message and prank your friends!

Don't be fooled by imitators that can supposedly send spoofed text messages. It turns out that this is the only app that can send messages to every wireless provider in the USA, including Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Spoof texting is currently available in Cydia and users can purchase 10 credits for $4.99, 20 credits for $9.99 or 50 credits for $19.99.

Apple is Aggressively Combating the Ability to Downgrade With SHSH Blobs

The iPhone Dev-Team reports that Apple is about to aggressively combat the ability to restore to previous firmware versions using saved SHSH blobs.

Currently, iOS devices owners can save their SHSH blobs using a tool like TinyUmbrella. This allows you to restore to a firmware version that is lower than the firmware currently running on your device. According to the iPhone Dev-Team, Apple is now making this process much more difficult with iOS 5.

---
Starting with the iOS5 beta, the role of the "APTicket" is changing - it's being used much like the "BBTicket" has always been used. The LLB and iBoot stages of the boot sequence are being refined to depend on the authenticity of the APTicket, which is uniquely generated at each and every restore (in other words, it doesn't depend merely on your ECID and firmware version…it changes every time you restore, based partly on a random number). This APTicket authentication will happen at every boot, not just at restore time. Because only Apple has the crypto keys to properly sign the per-restore APTicket, replayed APTickets are useless.

This will only affect restores starting at iOS5 and onward, and Apple will be able to flip that switch off and on at will (by opening or closing the APTicket signing window for that firmware, like they do for the BBTicket). geohot's limera1n exploit occurs before any of this new checking is done, so tethered jailbreaks will still always be possible. Also, restoring to pre-5.0 firmwares with saved blobs will still be possible (but you'll soon start to need to use older iTunes versions for that). Note that iTunes ultimately is *not* the component that matters here..it's the boot sequence on the device starting with the LLB.

Although it's always been just "a matter of time" before Apple started doing this (they've always done this with the BBTicket), it's still a significant move on Apple's part (and it also dovetails with certain technical requirements of their upcoming OTA "delta" updates).

Note: although there may still be ways to combat this, a beta period is really not the time or place to discuss them. We're just letting you know what Apple has already done in their exisiting beta releases - they've stepped up their game!
---

We'll keep you up to date with more information on the situation as it developers...

Apple Blocks iPhone 4 Unlock Via Gevey SIM

Apple has blocked the ability to unlock the iPhone 4 using the Gevey SIM in iOS 5.0b2, according to MuscleNerd.

it's surprising Apple closed Gevey interposer hole in b2 rather than waiting until final (maybe they were under pressure)

Gevey's SIM Interposer was able to unlock the iPhone 4 by force activating the baseband using the emergency dialer. MuscleNerd notes that its unlikely Gevey will try to battle Apple while iOS 5 is in the beta period.

The less fortunate in China are continuing to take extreme measures in their attempt to obtain expensive Apple products, according to a Korean Herald report.

Biznewschina reported that a female jiulinghou, referring to those born during the 90’s, tweeted on Weibo (Chinese version of Twitter) that it is her "dream to own a iPhone4 but her father won’t let her get one." She then decided to sleep with someone in exchange for the mobile device.

The Guangdong teen has posted a picture of herself along with other basic personal information saying she is willing to "sell" her virginity to anyone that buys her a iPhone 4.

iPhone 5 to Feature Dual LED Flash?

Recent market rumors have indicated that Apple's next iPhone (Rumored iPhone 5), will likely come with a dual LED Flash. Everlight Electronics, Edison Opto and Lite-On Technology are being suggested as potential suppliers. All the related companies have denied any involvement in the production of the LED flashes.

The rumors come amid market reports indicating that Apple reduced its orders for Lumileds high-power LED flash products from Philips recently and switched the orders for LED flashes to Taiwan makers.

Industry sources also state that Everlight and Lite-On have strengthened their deployments in the smartphone market for a while, so it would be no surprise to see their products in the next iPhone. The sources also noted that Edison Opto has a high chance of winning the dual LED flash orders from Apple because of their production of high-power LEDs and shipments to other handset vendors.

Weeks ago, a rumored case leak of the iPhone 5 featured a relocated flash opening. However, this new information could mean the relocation was actually making room for the dual LED Flash.

Radically Redesigned iPhone 5 Coming in August?

BGR is reporting that Apple will release a radically redesigned iPhone in August.

The site has confirmed that Apple is indeed giving some developers access to a device known as the iPhone 4S. This device has upgraded internals; however, their source says the next generation iPhone to be publicly released will not only have upgraded internals, it will also have a radically new case design.

BGR notes that while generally consensus has Apple releasing a new iPhone around September, their source says Apple may hold an event in early August to announce the new device and release it during the last week of August.

It's unclear what changes Apple has made to the design of the phone; however, TNW previously predicted a teardrop design.

Facebook is Finally Preparing to Release an Official iPad App

Facebook is finally preparing to release an official application for the iPad, according to the New York Times.

People briefed on Facebook’s plans say that in coming weeks the company plans to introduce a free iPad application that has been carefully designed and optimized for the tablet. The app has been in production at Facebook for almost a year, going through several design iterations, and is now in the final stages of testing, according to these people, who declined to be named because they were discussing confidential product plans.

The paper says Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has overseen the design and features of the app that have been carefully tailored to the iPad and its interface. It will take photos and video and has redesigned versions of Facebook Chat and Groups.

"The photo and video experience is amazing, offering full resolution and full-screen images," said a person who has seen the app.

Apple reportedly plans to help Facebook promote the app by featuring it prominently in the App Store.

iPhone 4S/5 Reaches Final Testing Stage, Release Scheduled for September?

The iPhone 4S/5 has reportedly reached the final testing stage and is now being carried around by Apple and carrier executives, according to a 9to5Mac report. The new device is supposedly scheduled for release in September.

The site also reports that Apple and Verizon are stilling trying to work out support for 3G FaceTime calls and over-the-air updates for iOS 5.

Apple and Verizon have yet to strike a deal regarding FaceTime over 3G for the Verizon network. Keep in mind that 3G and 4G aren’t the same thing.
Apple and Verizon are still working out kinks regarding support for iOS 5′s over-the-air updates, which we broke the news about, so carrier support may or may not be delayed past fall 2011.

There have been numerous reports that predict the iPhone update will be available in September orNovember. The question is whether this update will be a major or minor one.

iPhone Dev-Team Releases Windows Version of RedSn0w to Jailbreak iOS 5.0b1

The iPhone Dev-Team has released a Windows version of RedSn0w to jailbreak iOS 5.0b1.
